CONCRETE F.A.Q.

Q. Can you guarantee that my concrete will not crack?

A. Unfortunately, no.

Cured concrete is not a flexible material, however, the earth is constantly moving, swelling and shrinking. This movement occurs even without the earthquakes we have been experiencing lately in the Reno area.

In fact, any licensed concrete contractor should guarantee that your concrete will crack.

What we do is attempt to control where your concrete cracks, using grooves or cuts called control joints. Control joints are designed to do what they say--control. Control joints attempt to control where the concrete cracks. Pay attention to the concrete around you next time you are out and about—notice that the grooves in the concrete usually have a crack in them. In this case, the concrete has done what it is supposed to; it has cracked where the control joint is located.

If you are in an area with a lot of expansive soil, such as clay, it may be necessary to remove some of the soil beneath where your concrete will be located and replace it with less expansive soil in an attempt to minimize cracking.

Q. Can you install my concrete without grooves or cutting lines in it? I think that it looks better without them.

A. Unfortunately, we cannot do this. Building code calls for a groove or cut to be placed in the concrete at certain intervals. Please see the above question about no-crack guarantees for a more detailed explanation.
